OLD CHURCH

Standing alone, a stark alabaster shrine
Bells calling to worship now an echo
Filtered light seeping through stained glass
Melting, multicolored, on the communion table

Crucifix still clutching its nailed sacrifice,
Gazing down with saddened eyes
Upon the voiceless pulpit, darkened with use
A sentry, waiting, mocking the vacant silence

A dusty hymnal, yellowed pages, torn
Lying on the pew, whispering forgotten words
God, tear stained upon the altar, broken
Left for dead, for now, abandoned
