THE CAREGIVER

He's always been sick, it seems
dying for these past ten years.
She's let him go numerous times,
waiting by his bedside, praying,
thinking this would be the last.
She cried, braced herself, uncertain
reprieve, a miracle and another chance
remission and another month or two to
watch him live in pain, suffering.
He's taken the spot light, the first
consideration of everything.
Friends and family call, concerned
for him. How is he today, they ask,
he's in their thoughts and prayers.
Her life is wrapped around his illness,
on hold, waiting in the wings; Frodo's Sam.
At times, weary and alone, her compassion
turns to pity and grief to anger.
She wants to run away,
tired of being as useful as an armless batter
Then God reminds her that this burden is his,
she is not alone and in the darkness
of the long night, He carries them both.
